Introduction: Over the years I found that I needed to see the scale of the transportation and habitation systems I was working with and how they relate to each other and the human scale. With this in mind I eventually found and assembled models of all human spacecraft at the same scale for use in my work with NASA as a space architect and for my own enjoyment.

1978 to 2015

Introduction: Most of my career has been spent with NASA in the space architecture field. But over the years I have seen some of my architectural work built and have had the opportunity to produce designs for many others that were not built.

1994 to 2004

Introduction: From about 2010 to 2020 the Advanced Concepts Office with collaborators primarily from the Johnson Space Center and the Langley Research Center developed a number of habitat designs including mockups to explore options for the next space station and the habitation facilities required for human missions to Mars. At Marshall we developed the large diameter habitat module below, and several smaller modules about the size of those found on the International Space Station to explore new layouts and conduct human factors assessments.

Introduction: The Deep Space Laboratory uses the payload capability of the Space Launch System (SLS) to place new laboratory capabilities more capable than the International Space Station in orbit in one launch. It’s size is the same diameter as the SLS, utilizing the tooling from that system to form a large volume habitat designed for deep space operation. It is envisioned to be a support facility at the Gateway in orbit around the moon to serve as a research and testing station for in-situ resource utilization and the initial examination of samples from the moon and Mars adding an additional layer of planetary protection between worlds.

The Habitat Sizing Tool has been in development since 2007 to assist in the calculation of mass properties for habitat designs by the Advanced Concepts Office. It began as a simple tool using data from several reference publications and eventually expanded to include all disciplines using physics based calculations where needed. Variable inputs include number of crew, number of mission days, number of EVA’s, and location in orbits out to Mars and on the surface of the Moon or Mars.
